Gran Canaria and Gibraltar 2018

After doing several trips with a lot on the agenda it was time with a relaxing trip to San Agustin followed by a detour to Gibraltar to visit my Cousin Therese and her family before getting back to Sweden.

2018-07-29 Landing in Sweden

01:40

One hour late but now we have landed in Sweden after a 4 hour flight in a Boeing A320neo. With that the trip has ended and it was for sure a fun time but I already wonder where the future will take us.

2018-07-28 Short stop in a park with birds

After the food Stephanie was reading while I enjoyed taking some photos of the birds in a park.

2018-07-28 The best sea food ever

13:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

The last day in Malaga and not much time to walk around but when we were going to eat something we trusted the ratings on google maps and found a small restaurant that got really good reviews close to the bus stop. It didn't look much for the world on the outside but the food was just perfect and delivered in big quantities on top of the quality. The name of the place is Asador Inaki and we both really recommend it.

2018-07-27 Castillo de Gibralfaro

19:30

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

If you are looking for a great viewpoint to see Malaga and like castle architecture. They also sell something small to eat or drink while enjoying the view even if that wasn't an option for us given that we got the idea to enter when it was going to close within an hour.

2018-07-27 Malaga - a first stop to eat ice cream

17:50

Pic1Pic1Pic1

Not precisely true that this was the first stop in Malaga since we first headed to the Airbnb apartment we rent just to leave the bags but after thinking some time about what to do the ice cream felt like a really good next step.

2018-07-27 Getting on the bus to Malaga

10:00

Pic1Pic1

We took the bus to Malaga with the plan to stay one night to have some bonus sightseing in a new place.

2018-07-26 Waffles

I can't complain when we end the day by eating delicious waffles with the family of my cousin Therese and having a mini story telling show with Penelope.

Not a lot to see in the water but it was quite clear and occasionally I met some fish.

This is a small but cute garden that also has a nice playground.

2018-07-25 Taking a bath at the Eastern beach

16:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

Therese and her family showed us the beach on the eastern side of the cliff. Her lovely daughter, Penelope, really loved the water and even if it was a little cold she would never want to stop play in it. We played with a ball, splashed with water a lot. Up on the beach we continued by building in sand.

2018-07-25 Hiking to the top of Gibraltar

09:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

My cousin's husband Anthony gave us a tour of a hiking trail up to the top of Gibraltar, an incline of 450m counted from sea level but to be fair we started where the car could be parked at 167m above sea level. It was a nice trail with great views along the way and felt more unique compared to the guided tour. Given the interesting conversations with Anthony along the way this was guided as well since he had some stories about both sections of the cliff and other people that used to be there.

2018-07-24 Saying hallo to the monkeys

18:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

After a nice morning we continued to the monkeys and the caves with a guided car tour on recommendation. I gives the most time to see all parts of the cliff.

2018-07-24 First morning in Gibraltar

08:45

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

My cousin Therese lives here and that of course gives an extra reason to get here, but it is also a very special place since it basically is one single cliff around which everybody on the island have built their houses. The cliff itself has one extremely steep side, one side with a single road up along, monkeys everywhere on that cliff and long tunnels from the time war times in which you can get a view out from many cannon holes. The monkeys are wild animals and should be respected as such but are not dangerous to you if you are not teasing them. First thing to do was of course to meet up with my cousin and her family, enjoying some churros together at the south tip of Europe.

2018-07-23 La Linea

21:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

It was easier to find a place to stay at La Linea close to the border compared to within Gibraltar so we went for that option. Probably the easiest check in I have ever had, I called a number I had recieved and then a door opened automatically for me as well as I got a messege where I also could locate a key. After check in we continued into La Linea center to find a nice place for the evening meal.

2018-07-23 Travelling to Gibraltar

11:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

In the last post you could see that we had forgot to switch time zone, but at this time we were still not aware about that since we were lucky enough that we just got the table anyway at the restaurant. For that reason we thought that we have plenty of time to walk to the bus station to get on the bus at 14:00 heading for Gibraltar, we even first walk both to a new place for breakfast and a short fika up in Parasol Sevilla. Finally at the bus stop we saw that our bus will leave in 2 minutes and quickly ran to it, realizing the time difference from the last location.

2018-07-22 Celebrating our anniversary

23:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

Too celebrate our first wedding anniversary I found the restaurant Abades triana with a nice view next to a river. We had forgot to change time zone and not noticed until arrival at the restaurant so we were one hour late, but lucky enough we still got the reserved table.

2018-07-22 Walking around in Sevilla

17:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

Crazy hot outside and not the right time to walk around in a city but we started out walking early and are still determined to explore Sevilla. Good for the juice bar owners since we stopped by plenty of them for a refill. The thing that probably make it very interesting to walk here is that almost no streets are straight, without a map it would be very easy to get lost after a while. On top of that it is a lot of old buildings on narrow streets.

2018-07-22 Seeing the city from Parasol Sevilla

13:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

A short walk from the café we came to Parasol Seville, a big wooden construction that looks like enormous mushrooms that have grown together. At first we thought it was closed since the doors under it where closed but after a little while we saw that the entrance was located under ground. When walking down to the entrance we could also see bits from the city buildings hundreds of years back in time, preserved as a museum but it was possible to see a lot of it through glass walls without entering the museum. We headed on for the elevator to Parasol Sevilla and almost turned around when we got to know you can only pay with cash, something we hadn't fixed yet, but the cashier noticed and gave us a ticket anyway with the trust that we would get back to her later. It wasn't very high but it was higher than most other buildings in Sevilla, making it quick to get up and still offering a great view. Directly outside of the elevator there was a café with tables along the fence to offer a good view while taking a snack For us that was however not interesting at the moment, we instead had our eyes on the walkway on top of the construction. A part of it would even be possible to get to with wheelchair and the fences are good for children so the accessibility is perfect. We continued up the stairs to the top while taking pictures along the way and just enjoyed the view for a little while at the top before heading down on the other side of the top platform.

2018-07-22 Breakfast at Mama Inés

11:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

Not far from our apartment there was a little café named Mama Inés in a corner behind some citrus trees, a perfect little cozy place to eat breakfast at. A couple of hot toasts and a fresh fruit juice later we were ready to go for the day.

2018-07-21 Arriving at Sevilla

23:10

Pic1

No information at all regarding delays but the gate still didn't open until 10 minutes after the scheduled takeoff time, strangely enough without changing the information regarding takeoff time. It was however no other problems to travel with Vueling and after a fairly smooth flight we landed 10 min early at 23:00 and quickly got into a cab heading for the apartment.

2018-07-21 One last day in Rocas Rojas swimming pool area

17:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1

Our last day on Gran Canaria started with packing our bags and preparing a picknick bag for the day. The flight was however not scheduled until 20:00 so we had plenty of time to just relax by the swimming pool and browse Internet regarding our next destination, Sevilla. In the meantime the bags were stored in the luggage room so when it eventually was time to leave we just picked up the bags and got out to the bus stop just outside of the reception, equally convenient as with a Taxi but much cheaper.

2018-07-20 Panorama restaurant

Today we enjoyed the view from a restaurant with panorama view.

2018-07-20 Maspolamas waterpark

18:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

About 9km from our place at Rocas Rojas the Maspolamas waterpark is situated so it was a quick drive to get there and 11 o'clock we entered the park. It didn't take long to realize that it wouldn't be much fun without a fast pass ticket so we bought that directly; well, atleast after we first grabbed floating rings from the fast track lane by mistake and was corrected by a lifeguard. Those floating rings were also the most common thing to use in the waterslides in the park, something I think is not usually the case in most waterparks. It was very fun and everybody can probably find something they like since the attractions' thrill level was everything from zero and up except that I would like to see the maximum level to be higher. At 16:30 we felt done for the day, every slide was tested at the time and then we of course rewarded ourselves with a delicious ice-cream before heading back to our place.

2018-07-19 Las Palmas

17:00

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

It was quite nice to walk around the old buildings in Las Palmas and see the environment but since I wasn't really interested in shopping the rest became boring. Lucky for me the food and a smoothie at a cafe along the way made up for the time around the stores that, according to Stéphanie, were mandatory.

2018-07-18 Relaxing and playing tennis

Pic1Pic1Pic1

It's nice to have some days with less activities and this was a day like that. Playing tennis was however very fun to do instead of only relax for the whole day.

2018-07-16 A final stop was made at a little restaurant

21:20

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

It took longer time to drive than expected on the narrow mountain roads so it felt extra good to sit and eat tapas at a restaurant this evening instead of cooking the dinner ourselves. The tapas were great at Taberna El Picoteo but a few of them came to the table quite late so I thought they forgot about them. The restaurant is however still recommended if you are nearby.

2018-07-16 Getting back from the centre of the island

16:30

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

On the way down we stopped in a beautiful village along the road to just look around and eat ice-cream.

2018-07-16 Highest point of Gran Canaria

14:50

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

With the path set in Google maps we headed in towards the centre of the Island and after some twisted roads we came up to the highest point of Gran Canaria. Along the way we both bought some locally produced marmelade as well as cheese, much more fun compared to buying it in a store. While being at the top the view was great and the sky was clear enough to see both Tenerife and La Gomera sticking up to the left behind Tenerife.

2018-07-16 Breakfast

10:44

Pic1Pic1

While relaxing and eating breakfast we are also planning a trip for the day.

2018-07-15 Dinner on the porch

19:00

Isn't it a nice way to end the day just to eat dinner at the porch and have interesting conversations all evening?

2018-07-15 First bath in the sea

13:30

Pic1Pic1Pic1

It's hot in the sun but with the help of some wind and a lot of water it's a very nice day.

2018-07-14 Heading for new places

11:30

Pic1Pic1Pic1Pic1

I'm not exactly having the best start on this trip since I got ill a couple of days ago and haven't fully recovered yet, but now we are on the way to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. I have been to Fuerte Ventura once, but as I like it to be when travelling Las Palmas is a new place for me. Stéphanie is by my side as the perfect wife, travelling companion and, even if I try to avoid it, also acting nurse. I'm the one responsible for the technical stuff so of course my bag is loaded with cameras and my tablet prepared with several episodes of Lucifer at Netflix for the flight.
